You've received a password-protected PDF, you know the password, but now you need to merge it with another document, compress it, or simply hand it off to a colleague without requiring them to enter a password every time. Removing the protection is straightforward — and you can do it entirely in your browser.

Important: This only works if you know the current password. There is no legitimate way to bypass AES-256 PDF encryption without the password, and this guide won't help you do that.

When to remove a PDF password

How to remove a PDF password for free (no upload)

What if I don't know the password?

If you've genuinely forgotten the password to a document you created:

1. Check your password manager. If you used 1Password, Bitwarden, Keychain, or similar, search for the file name or the URL where you created the password.
2. Contact the sender. If the document came from someone else, ask them to resend it without a password or with a different one.
3. Try common passwords. If you set the password yourself, try your most common passwords or variations.

There is no technical workaround. Modern AES-256 PDF encryption is unbreakable without the password — any online tool claiming to "crack" or "bypass" PDF passwords is either processing weak RC4-encrypted files, or it's malware.

Privacy note

Because your password is entered in the browser and processed locally, it never reaches any server. Close the browser tab and both the decrypted file and the password are gone from memory. Frequently asked questions

Does this work on all password-protected PDFs? It works on PDFs protected with a standard open password (AES-128 or AES-256). If the PDF is protected by a permissions/owner password only (it opens without a password but you can't print or edit), the tool may not be needed — try opening the file directly.

Will the unlocked PDF look exactly like the original? Yes — mupdf decrypts the content stream and saves it without any modification to the actual document content.

Can I unlock a PDF I didn't create? Only if you know the password. Unlocking a document without authorisation is not the intended use and may not be legal depending on the document.
