Fill out any PDF form and add your signature — type text, dates, checkmarks, and a signature, then download the completed document. Free, in your browser, no upload.
Most government forms, job applications, insurance documents, and contracts are distributed as PDFs. Many of them are interactive PDF forms (AcroForms) — you can click into fields and type. Others are flat PDFs with no form fields — you need a tool that lets you place text anywhere on the page. Signvoy has free tools for both cases.
Two types of PDF forms — and the right tool for each
Interactive AcroForms: These have real fillable fields — you click in a box and a cursor appears. Most government forms, IRS documents, and professionally produced contracts are AcroForms.
→ Use the PDF Form Filler tool, which detects and lists all fields, lets you fill them, then flattens them into the document.
Flat PDFs: These look like forms but have no underlying form fields — they're just PDFs that happen to have lines and labels. You need to place text on top of the image.
→ Use the Fill and Sign PDF tool, which lets you click anywhere and add text, date stamps, checkmarks, and a signature.
Not sure which type your PDF is? Try the Form Filler first — if it detects fields, great. If not, use Fill and Sign.
How to fill and sign a PDF for free (no upload)
Signvoy's free Fill and Sign PDF tool handles flat PDFs where you need to place content manually.
Step 1 — Open the tool. Go to signvoy.com/tools/fill-and-sign-pdf. No account or sign-up required.
Step 2 — Upload your PDF. Drag and drop your form or click to browse. Your file stays in your browser — never uploaded to a server.
Step 3 — Add your information. Click anywhere on the document to place an element:
- Text: Type names, addresses, numbers, or any text
- Date: Insert today's date (or a custom date) as formatted text
- Checkmark: Place a ✓ mark in checkbox areas
- Signature: Draw or type your signature on a signature pad, then place it on the document
Each element can be dragged to reposition and resized after placement.
Step 4 — Download. Click Download to save the completed document. All additions are permanently burned into the PDF.
How to fill an interactive AcroForm
For PDFs with real form fields, use the PDF Form Filler tool:
- Upload the PDF
- The tool automatically detects all form fields and lists them
- Fill in each field
- Click Download — the form is flattened (fields converted to permanent text) and downloaded
Flattening is important if you're sending the completed form to someone else. It prevents recipients from clearing or modifying your answers.
Adding your signature
For drawn signatures, the tool provides a signature pad:
- Draw: Use your mouse or touchscreen to draw your signature
- Type: Enter your name and choose a script font
Once placed, the signature is embedded as an image in the PDF. For a standalone signature file (to reuse across multiple documents), use the Signature Generator tool to create and download a transparent PNG.
Filling government and tax forms
US government forms (like IRS 1040, W-9, I-9) are typically interactive AcroForms. Fill them using the Form Filler tool for the most accurate result.
State government forms vary — some are AcroForms, others are flat PDFs. If the Form Filler shows no fields, switch to Fill and Sign and place text manually.
For forms that require notarization or witnessing, this tool creates the filled-in document that you'd then print, sign in person (if required), and return. Electronic-only submission generally requires a platform that captures a full audit trail.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between Fill and Sign PDF and PDF Form Filler? Fill and Sign lets you click anywhere and place text, dates, checkmarks, and signatures on flat PDFs. PDF Form Filler specifically detects and fills AcroForm fields (interactive PDF form fields) and is faster for properly designed form PDFs.
Is there a limit on how many fields I can fill? No — fill as many as your document has.
Can I edit a field after placing it? Yes — click the placed element to select it, then edit the text or drag it to reposition.
Does the completed document look the same as the original? Yes — the tool adds your text on top of the existing content without altering the original layout.
Is this legally sufficient for form submissions? For most everyday purposes (job applications, internal forms, non-notarized submissions), yes. For forms requiring a notarized or witnessed signature, you'd still need the appropriate in-person process.
Are my files uploaded? No — your PDF and all content you enter stays entirely in your browser.
