You need to share a contract but it contains personal identification numbers, bank account details, or confidential clauses that shouldn't be visible. Redaction permanently removes sensitive content from a PDF — replacing it with black boxes that cannot be reversed or recovered. It's not the same as drawing a black rectangle on top, which can often be removed.

Redaction vs. covering text — a critical difference

A common mistake is placing a black rectangle or text box over sensitive content using a PDF editor. This looks redacted but the original text is still in the file — it's just hidden visually. Anyone who selects the area, searches the document, or looks at the PDF's internal data can recover the underlying content.

True redaction removes the underlying data permanently. After proper redaction:

  • The text or image under the black box is gone from the file
  • Selecting over the area returns no text
  • The file's internal data contains no reference to the original content

Signvoy's free Redact PDF tool burns redactions permanently into the document — the underlying content cannot be recovered.

How to redact a PDF for free (no upload)

Step 1 — Open the tool. Go to signvoy.com/tools/redact-pdf. No account required.

Step 2 — Upload your PDF. Drag and drop your file or click to browse. Your PDF loads in the browser — never sent to a server.

Step 3 — Draw redaction boxes. Click and drag to draw a box over any area you want to redact — text, images, or any part of the page. Draw as many boxes as needed across multiple pages.

Step 4 — Apply and download. Click Apply Redactions. The selected areas are permanently removed and replaced with black boxes. The redacted PDF downloads immediately.

Review your document carefully before downloading — once applied, redactions cannot be undone without the original file.

What you should redact

Common categories of information to redact before sharing documents:

  • Personal identifiers: Social Security numbers, passport numbers, driver's license numbers, date of birth
  • Financial data: Account numbers, routing numbers, credit card numbers, salary figures (in documents not intended for the reader)
  • Medical information: Patient names, diagnoses, treatment details in documents shared with non-medical parties
  • Legal details: Confidential settlement figures, privileged communications, witness information
  • Contact information: Home addresses, personal phone numbers, email addresses when not relevant to the reader

Best practices for redaction

Print a review copy first. Before redacting, print or screenshot the document and mark everything that needs to go. It's easy to miss something when working page by page.

Redact similar items across all pages. Search for the content first (Ctrl+F in your PDF viewer) to find all instances of a name, number, or phrase before starting. The browser tool doesn't have search-based auto-redaction — you draw boxes manually.

Check the document metadata. Redacting visible content is necessary but not sufficient. PDFs can also contain author names, comments, revision history, and custom properties in metadata. For thorough sanitization of highly sensitive documents, consider processing with a professional tool that also strips metadata.

Keep the original. Always maintain the un-redacted original in a secure location. The redacted version is a derivative — if you need to re-produce it with different redactions, you'll need the source.

When this tool is appropriate — and when to use something stronger

Appropriate for:

  • Everyday document sharing where you need to hide specific data
  • Documents where visual redaction is sufficient (the recipient gets a PDF with black boxes)
  • Quick preparation of documents without sensitive legal or compliance requirements around redaction certification

Consider professional tools for:

  • Documents subject to FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) or legal discovery, where redaction must meet specific legal standards
  • Situations requiring a redaction audit log (who redacted what, when)
  • Automated bulk redaction of hundreds of documents

Adobe Acrobat Pro, Nuance Power PDF, and specialized legal redaction software provide additional features like pattern-based auto-redaction and certified redaction workflows.

Frequently asked questions

Is the redaction truly permanent? Yes — the tool permanently removes the underlying content from the PDF, not just visually covers it. The black boxes contain no recoverable data.

Can I redact images as well as text? Yes — draw a box over any area of the page, including images, charts, or diagrams.

Can I undo a redaction after applying? No. Once you click Apply Redactions and download the file, the redaction is permanent. Keep the original un-redacted file separately.

Does redaction affect the rest of the document? No — only the areas within your drawn boxes are affected. The rest of the document is preserved exactly.

Can I redact a password-protected PDF? Remove the password first, then redact.

Are my files uploaded when I use this tool? No — your PDF is processed entirely in your browser and never transmitted to any server.
