Watermarks serve several practical purposes: marking a document as DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL, indicating copyright ownership, branding a shared document with your company name, or deterring unauthorized copying. Adding one to a PDF takes about 30 seconds and you don't need Acrobat or any paid software.

Common uses for PDF watermarks

  • Draft control: Mark working versions of contracts, reports, or presentations as "DRAFT" so recipients know the document isn't final
  • Confidentiality: Add "CONFIDENTIAL" or "FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY" to sensitive documents shared broadly
  • Copyright protection: Brand distributed documents with your name or company to deter misappropriation
  • Version control: Mark different versions with "v1.2" or "REVISION 3" embedded in the pages
  • Client documents: Add a client's name to customised documents you send them

How to watermark a PDF for free (no upload)

Signvoy's free Watermark PDF tool adds a text watermark to every page. You control the text, size, opacity, and rotation — and it all runs in your browser without uploading your file.

Step 1 — Open the tool. Go to signvoy.com/tools/watermark-pdf. No account needed.

Step 2 — Upload your PDF. Drag and drop your file or click to browse. Your file loads in the browser — never sent to a server.

Step 3 — Configure your watermark.

  • Text: The watermark text itself (e.g., "DRAFT," "CONFIDENTIAL," your company name)
  • Opacity: How transparent the watermark appears (lower = more subtle, less obtrusive to readers)
  • Size: Font size of the watermark text
  • Rotation: Angle in degrees (e.g., 45° for a diagonal watermark, 0° for horizontal)

Step 4 — Download. Click Download watermarked PDF. The watermark is rendered on every page and your browser downloads the result immediately.

Choosing the right watermark style

For CONFIDENTIAL / DRAFT marks:

  • Text: "CONFIDENTIAL" or "DRAFT"
  • Opacity: 20–35% (visible but doesn't overwhelm content)
  • Size: Large (60–80pt)
  • Rotation: 45° diagonal

For copyright / branding marks:

  • Text: "© Your Name 2026" or "Company Name"
  • Opacity: 15–25%
  • Size: Medium (30–50pt)
  • Rotation: 45° or 0°

For version labels:

  • Text: "v2.1 DRAFT" or "REVISION 3"
  • Opacity: 40–60%
  • Size: Small to medium (20–30pt)
  • Rotation: 0° (horizontal, positioned at header or footer)

Is a watermark permanent?

Watermarks added with this tool are rendered as content on each page — they're not metadata or a separate layer. A determined person with Acrobat could potentially use content editing tools to remove them, but it requires significant effort. For casual recipients, a watermark is an effective deterrent and indicator.

For stronger copy protection (actual DRM rather than watermarking), you need a dedicated DRM platform, which is a different category of tool.

Watermarking before distribution

If you're sending a document to multiple parties and want each copy to be identifiable, consider personalising the watermark per recipient ("Prepared for: ABC Corp") before sending. This creates a paper trail if a confidential document gets leaked — you can identify which copy was shared.

Removing a watermark

If you have a watermarked PDF and need to produce a clean version, you'd need the original un-watermarked source file. There's no reliable automated way to remove a burned-in text watermark from a rendered PDF without also affecting the underlying content.

Frequently asked questions

Is the watermark applied to every page? Yes — the tool applies the same watermark configuration to every page in the document.

Can I use a logo image as a watermark instead of text? Not with this tool — it supports text watermarks only. For image watermarks, you'd need Adobe Acrobat Pro or a design tool like Adobe InDesign.

Does the watermark obscure text on the page? At typical opacity settings (20–35%), the watermark is visible but the underlying text remains readable. Use lower opacity if your document has dense content.

Can I watermark a password-protected PDF? No — remove the password first, then watermark.

Are my files uploaded? No — everything runs in your browser. Your document never leaves your device.

What file size limit is there? 25 MB per file.
